AEDM - Day 30

This evening I planned out another painting as a Christmas present for someone. I knew I wanted to choose a view of a certain North-Eastern UK town (which I won't name just yet in case the recipient sees this). I did some research on the internet (as I've never actually been to this place myself) and printed out a few photos and pictures to work out which angle I was going to paint from. I decided to paint looking in at the coast from the sea. I chose my canvas and drew out the rough outlines with light pencil.

So far I have painted the sky, which took quite a while. I used acrylic paint, various paintbrushes and most importantly, pieces of washing up sponge.

AEDM - Day 29

More journalling today. I finished the adjacent page to yesterday's, with some printed words, pictures and photographs.

AEDM - Day 28

I tried to finish yesterdays journal page but I'm still not that happy with it. Thanks to those who commented on the page yesterday - I will have a think about your suggestions and see if I can add anything to it so that I'm satisfied with it! I did add the lace and ink splatters, and stuck everything down with Spray Mount. It just doesn't feel quite right to me and I can't work out exactly why. Perhaps I'm being too picky as it is my first completed journal page.

AEDM - Day 27

Today I have a half completed Journal Your Dreams page. Still playing about with the layout so haven't stuck the pieces down yet. I might add some lace and a button, and maybe some splatters of black ink. I might even use one of the other backgrounds instead - not sure the black and white images work on this colour background. Any opinions are welcomed!

AEDM - Day 26

Another splatter and splosh paint day today. This is a very large double page spread in my Journal Your Dreams sketchbook. Still scared to add pictures and text to my backgrounds, but I will add some simple text to this one soon (even though I love how it looks on its own!).

25 November 2010

AEDM - Day 25

I worked on some backgrounds for journal pages today and borrowed this idea from someone in my Journal Your Dreams class. I wet random sections of the paper/watercolour board and then splattered and sploshed various colours of paint on top - it was that simple! I love the effects though and think they will make great backgrounds for all sorts of art.

AEDM - Day 24

I can't reveal too much of my artwork today because it is going to be a Christmas present for someone. I spent about 3 hours on it and I am very pleased with how it turned out. It is my first proper acrylic painting (I've done experimental paintings without a brush etc but never tried to do a serious painting with brushes!!).

Had to remove image of my art for today just until Christmas!!

Dubious Science Fact 15

On average, humans lose 40-100 strands of hair per day.

AEDM - Day 23

Today I finished one of the pages I painted yesterday in my sketchbook. I love the effect of leaving the crunched up clingfilm on it to dry:

Then I added some cut out magazine words and images to create a collage. In case you can't read it, the words say 'Discover your own stories'.

AEDM - Day 22

I tried a few different art/craft techniques this evening before I could get in the mood for creating. Firstly I tried sewing as I have quite a few half-made plush creatures for the Fur Will Fly shop - but I just wasn't in the mood for it and couldn't be bothered! Then I tried continuing with yesterdays Journal Your Dreams pages, by splattering paint and ink on top of the watercolour washes - but I wasn't enjoying that either and it just didn't feel right.

So I thought I'd do a watercolour wash and clingfilm technique on one of my Sketchbook Project pages - I did enjoy this and the purple and brown colours look really good together, but I had to leave it to dry and didn't feel like that was enough art for today.

I started tidying up my work area when I found a piece of cartridge paper I'd cut to size for a frame last week and decided to draw a sketch using my watersoluble graded pencils (8B, 6B, 4B) and mix them with the coloured watersoluble pencils to see what happened. It is a simple drawing but I like the combination of pencils.

21 November 2010

AEDM - Day 21

I did some more watercolour background for my Journal Your Dreams course today. I'm loving the effect of the cling film over the top - leaving this page to dry first before removing the cling film this time.

20 November 2010

AEDM - Day 20

I signed up for a 'Journal Your Dreams' course run by Amelia Critchlow from the 101 Bird Tales blog, and one of the first things we had to do was create watercolour backgrounds for journal pages, using a variety of different experimental techniques. This page was created by wetting the page and then squeezing different colours of watercolour paint from a brush held above the page. I could have done many more pages this evening but because it is in a sketchbook I had to wait for the incredibly wet page to dry before I could turn it over!!

AEDM - Day 19

I decided to do a male sketch today which is always a challenge as I prefer drawing my female characters and sketches. I guess I think there is more variation with female characters - hair, pretty dresses etc. I am trying to do more males sketches though as my Sketchbook Project theme is Boys and Girls! I was going to add the wording 'sorry or guilty?' to this sketch then decided maybe that was a little cynical and mean to the male population. I'm sure some of them do buy flowers simply because it is a nice gesture and will make their partner smile!

AEDM - Day 18

Inspiration was eluding me again today until I copied the drawing from my mini artwork last week. I wanted to use the watersoluble sketching pencils I found the other day so I just coloured parts in then added the words. It was a very quick piece of art today!

The 365 Scientist - Days 123-126

Day 123

Seeing as the 365 Scientist is so keen on saving up for that Blackberry, he suggested carrying out some household chores in return for pocket money. Any excuse not to do the endless sweeping and cleaning is great for me!

Day 124

The 365 Scientist did his bit for Rememberance Day today. He observed the 2 minute silence and thought about the sacrifice that all those killed in times of war made for us.

Day 125

It has been raining a lot today and the 365 Scientist got quite concerned about our Halloween pumpkin that is still sitting in the garden. He thought it might be cold and hungry so he took him a plastic hat and a bag of Chilli tortilla chips! Isn't that thoughtful!

Day 126

Looks like the 365 Scientist has discovered the lure of the National Lottery! He looks quite excited at the prospect of winning millions of pounds. He did tell me though that if he wins he'll buy his Blackberry and give the rest of the money to charity!

17 November 2010

AEDM - Day 17

I had the opportunity to take some more experimental photographs today, playing with long exposures and the lights as I was travelling in a car (as a passenger, in case you were worried!). I love the random effects you can achieve, and I wanted to capture the feeling of movement and travelling. I think that has worked in some of them. Others are just random lights and shapes, but I still like them. I'm planning on using some of these photos as backgrounds and objects in collages for my journalling or artwork soon.

Dubious Science Fact 14

For each minute of the day, 1 billion tons of rain falls on the Earth.

16 November 2010

AEDM - Day 16

I had a very busy day today and wasn't in the mood for creating when I got home, but I knew I had to do something to post here, so I was trying to think of something quick and easy to do. I had the intention of doing a quick doodle or sketch but that turned into a more detailed drawing after all! Sometimes you don't know what you can do until you try!

15 November 2010

AEDM - Day 15

My art for today is photography based as I was inspired by the gorgeous sunset I saw from my garden. The sky looked just like an oil painting so I tried a few photographs to capture how pretty it looked. Also, the moon was out and I thought it looked nice with the rose bush in the foreground - not sure which version looks best so I included both the landscape and the portrait.

Sorry for the delay in posting, but the winner of my 'A Woman is Abstract' ACEO is.......

....comment number 3...........................mamipdx!

Congratulations, and I will contact you via email for your address shortly.

Stay tuned for another giveaway before Christmas!!

AEDM - Day 14

I wasn't feeling inspired or creative at all for most of today but I forced myself to create something this evening, and this is what I came up with. I used my Promarkers today for a nice bright colour.

The 365 Scientist - Days 119-122

Day 119

The 365 Scientist wanted to celebrate Bonfire Night so we had our own little bonfire and sparklers in the garden!

Day 120

The 365 Scientist just checking the football results on his Blackberry. Well, strictly it's not his Blackberry, but he was allowed to play at being a businessman for a little while at least!

Day 121

Oh dear, looks like the 365 Scientist does want a Blackberry now after borrowing one yesterday. He pointed out the exact one in the Argos catalogue. I think that might be a little out of my price range right now - hope he wont be too disappointed.

Day 122

After deciding on which Blackberry he wanted to buy, the 365 Scientist thought it was best to start saving. I found him this little safe (with a combination lock and everything!) and he locked all his savings, including some buttons and a duckie, inside.

AEDM - Day 13

Well I am quite surprised that it is day 13 of Art Every Day Month and I've posted on my blog every single day so far! Todays offering is a quick life drawing sketch. Not much else to say about it really - I just used my sketching pencils. Still, another page down in the Sketchbook Project!

12 November 2010

AEDM - Day 12

This drawing is for a chunky square black frame I bought the other day. I used my trusty water soluble pencils again ( I can't stop using them!!!). I'd quite like to draw this out again but a lot bigger, and maybe even use acrylic paints to colour it in.

The 365 Scientist - Days 115-118

Day 115

The 365 Scientist had read an article that says talking to your plants can help them grow. I'm not totally convinced by his choice of book but reading to our Peace Lily certainly can't do any harm!

Day 116

Now I know the 365 Scientist put a scarf on his Christmas list for Santa, and that Christmas is a long time away, but I don't think stealing a scarf from Diesel the Moose's neck is a very nice thing to do.  Poor old Diesel. I shall have to intervene.

Day 117

I was very cross with the 365 Scientist for his behaviour yesterday so I had to send him to the naughty step. He looks pretty fed up about it but I hope he'll learn his lesson.

Day 118

To make up for his behaviour the other day and to say sorry, the 365 Scientist baked Diesel a special lemon tart.

11 November 2010

AEDM - Day 11

It was doodle day today! Just a quick and colourful doodle in my sketchbook.

10 November 2010

AEDM - Day 10

I worked on a drawing for the Sketchbook Project again today. I'm feeling much more confident about completing the sketchbook now after rebinding it with thicker paper. It was starting to look like an impossible task before that.

Anyway, my art of the day is this drawing of a little girl and her best pal out in the autumn weather. Hope you like it!

Dubious Science Fact 13

The typical size of a meteor is about one cubic centimeter, which is equivalent to the size of a sugar cube.

09 November 2010

AEDM - Day 9

I decided to go mini today with 2 tiny sketches in frames, measuring under 2" high! And because I'm feeling generous, I've decided to give them away to the first person to make a purchase from my We Will Fly shop - I only started listing in it in September but I haven't had a sale yet and I'm feeling a little disheartened, so hopefully this might encourage someone to be my first customer!

08 November 2010

AEDM - Day 8

I completed a colourful sketch for my We Will Fly shop today, inspired by the recent rainbow challenge I'm taking part in on Flickr. I started off drawing the outlines and words using pen and ink. Then I started the colour - I wanted the rainbow to be brighter than the rest so I used Promarkers. I coloured the rest in with my trusty watercolour pencils. I'm really pleased with the contrast between the different mediums.

I made this drawing just the right size to fit in this pretty pearl-coloured frame I found today. The completed item is for sale here!
