My Olympic Mascot Love Affair

I'm not afraid to say it..... ♥ I love the Olympic mascots ♥

In another life I would've been the one to design them; I mean, one-eyed crazy creatures - that's kind of my thing. Unfortunately it wasn't me, so I have to be content with buying some mass-produced 'made in China' plush jobbies like everyone else. Or not like everyone else if I'm to believe most mentions of them in the media. I get so annoyed hearing people slag them off as ridiculous or meaningless. OK, they are not your typical two-eyed teddy bear, but isn't that a good thing? We've got enough teddies in the world already surely? I'm proud that our Olympic mascots are different. I love the fact that every part of their design has been thought about and woven into a back story. If you want to find out more, don't just read Wikipedia, check out this interview with Wenlock himself:

I realised I had a slight obsession with defending these mascots when asked what my favourite moment of the Olympic games had been, and hearing myself reply that it wasn't seeing Jess Ennis or Mo Farah win gold, it was definitely the moment I saw a giant Wenlock, holding a little gold Wenlock, jumping around on the track at the end of the men's 200m final!!!

Given my obsession, I was pretty excited when I heard about the Mayor of London stroll discovery trails around London featuring huge mascot statues all dressed up as various landmarks or characters. I knew I had to try out the routes, and so far I've spotted about half of the 82 mascots! Here are a few of my favourites:

And for anyone who loves them as much as me, you can even design your own mascots online! Here are 2 sporty mascot versions of me I had fun designing..............

I wasn't a huge fan of the mascot, but now that I've seen the cycloptic figure all dressed up in different themes, I kind of dig it.
